CNY, the week that was

It was the first for several of us, celebrating the Lunar New Year away from home. Fortunate for me, my parents visited me in Penang.

A night before New Year's Eve. Savouring our recently purchased Baskin Robins just before I left for my grannie's place.

On the morning of New Year's Eve, my granny conducted some prayer and ritual which I totally don't understand. Apparently it's for my late grandfather and other relatives who had passed away.

The "feasting" table

What I found interesting was we got to eat the food right after the prayers. XD

And as usual, on the night of New Year's Eve we will have a reunion dinner with relatives. It was a rather small gathering for us. Nevertheless, there were plenty of food...

...All prepared by my grandmother...

...coupled with a bottle of Frontera White Wine.

The very next morning was Chinese New Year. I was shook up from bed by the drums and percussion of a performing lion dance troupe just opposite my grannie's house.

And just like every CNY we go visiting and all. Unfortunately, somehow we only managed to visit one or two houses. Kinda like a dull New Year but that doesn't really matter.

My grandmother would cook Assam Laksa every CNY. So I decided to invite my housemates over for dinner.

Lobster Thermidor

After a very long time, my family and I made a return to the End of the World seafood restaurant in Teluk Bahang. I used to dine there when I was really small. Now, the restaurant had shifted to a new location and it's much more 'modern' than what it used to be.

New Year with new resolution... Start Drinking...

According to Chinese custom, the New Year wouldn't be complete without "yee sang".

So we purchased ready made yee sang at Cold Storage.
The problem we encountered was the fact that we did not have a platter large enough to accommodate the yee sang. The solution = cling wrap the table and 'voila'.

yee sang on table.

Last but not least, we had our very own casino de Monte Carlo in Batu Feringghi.

Coupled with some peanuts and beer, we had the ultimate gambling session, 400km from home.
